Travel with a travel companion

For the safety of passengers with disabilities, Air France may require the presence of a travel companion. Their main role would be to assist in case of an emergency; and specifically in the event of an aircraft evacuation. If you are traveling with a travel companion at the request of Air France, it is possible to modify their name at no charge and up to 48 hours before the departure of the first flight of your trip. For this, please contact ourcustomer service.

A travel companion is required in the following cases :

  • To accompany a person with a mental disability which prevents them from understanding and applying safety instructions,
  • To accompany a person who is both blind and deaf, which may hinder possible communication with the crew,
  • To accompany a person with a motor-based disability, which may physically prevent them from participating autonomously in an evacuation.

Most people with paraplegia, paralysis, or who are missing both upper limbs can travel without a travel companion. However, a travel companion is mandatory for most people with quadriplegia.

The travel companion must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be autonomous* and over the age of 18. 
  • They cannot take care of a passenger with a disability while also caring for :
    • a child under the age of 4 (on flights in Metropolitan and Overseas France),
    • a child under the age of 5 (on international flights),
    • or another passenger with a disability**.

Children traveling alone A child with disabilities can travel alone with theKids Solo service :

  • if they are physically capable of participating in an aircraft evacuation,
  • if they are able to understand and apply safety instructions.
